Detoxification, general product information & effects

Why is detoxification important?

Unfortunately, with our current diet, we not only supply our bodies with valuable nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, but also ingest substances that, in certain quantities, can be harmful to our health. Such pollutants include environmental contaminants such as heavy metals and aluminum, which can enter food via air, water, and soil contamination. These pollutants have the unpleasant property of accumulating in the food chain. Furthermore, these substances can be found in our living and working environments, for example, in medications, cosmetics, household chemicals, dust, fumes, paints, varnishes, solvents, and disinfectants, technical devices, water pipes, and energy-saving light bulbs.

How do I detoxify my body?

One simple and popular method of detoxification in naturopathy is the ingestion of independently tested natural minerals such as zeolite and bentonite. These can act like a sponge, binding harmful substances such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, aluminum, and nickel in the digestive tract. Since these natural minerals are insoluble in water and indigestible, they are simply excreted naturally through the intestines with the bound toxins. This relieves the burden on the body.

How does the body detoxify?
Ion exchange

The natural minerals zeolite and bentonite contained in these independently tested products have, among other things, the special property of selectively binding certain harmful substances, such as lead (Pb2+), mercury (Hg2+), chromium (Cr3+), cadmium (Cd2+), aluminum (Al3+), and nickel (Ni2), in their natural cavities through ion exchange and adsorption, and releasing the minerals contained in the cavities, such as calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+). Here is a simplified diagram of the detoxification principle:

What are zeolite and bentonite?

Zeolite and bentonite are natural minerals of volcanic origin with a high silicon content. There are more than 100 different types of zeolite. Clinoptilolite zeolite is used for health-promoting and medicinal purposes. This microporous tuff rock consists of a crystal lattice structure with cavities containing cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) has been used for natural detoxification since ancient times and is known for its effective pollutant-binding properties. For example, after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, 500,000 tons of clinoptilolite zeolite were used to encase the reactor and to decontaminate water, soil, objects, animals, and humans.

Bentonite is a white or grayish-white clay of volcanic origin with a high proportion of montmorillonite, which is characterized as a three-layer silicate with swelling capacity (smectite). In its active properties, montmorillonite bentonite is very similar to clinoptilolite zeolite. Bentonite has the ability to bind various pollutants on its surface and in the spaces between the layers. Its special characteristics are that it expands when water is added, forming a slightly gel-like consistency. Following the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, montmorillonite bentonite was successfully used in Germany and Austria as a feed additive to reduce radioactive contamination in livestock meat and milk.

What is ZeolithMED?

ZeolithMED are independently tested, CE-certified products made from natural clinoptilolite zeolite for oral use – without any additives. In our online shop, we offer ZeolithMED Detox Powder and Ultrafine Powder, as well as ZeolithMED Detox Capsules with purely plant-based capsule shells. What is ZeolithMED used for?

Increased exposure to heavy metals can cause a variety of physical complaints, with headaches and fatigue being just two possible examples. The natural medicinal product ZeolithMED can therefore make an important contribution to your health. Like a sponge, ZeolithMED selectively binds harmful substances in the gastrointestinal tract and naturally excretes them from the body. The indigestible ZeolithMED, along with the bound harmful substances, is naturally excreted via the intestines in the stool without burdening the metabolism. By binding substances such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, aluminum, and nickel, ZeolithMED can help relieve the burden on the organism. Further information about ZeolithMED can be found here .

Where does our zeolite come from?

Zeolite deposits exist on every continent. The nearest high-quality clinoptilolite zeolite deposits in the EU are found in the Carpathian Mountains, where our zeolite also comes from. The zeolite deposits are mined using open-pit mining. The quality testing of our zeolite raw material is carried out in German testing laboratories. ZeolithMED and the zeolite products in the "natural cosmetics" category are manufactured in Germany.

What is BentonitMED?

BentonitMED are independently tested, CE-certified products made from natural montmorillonite bentonite for oral use – completely additive-free. BentonitMED Detox Powder and BentonitMED Detox Capsules with purely plant-based capsule shells are available. Pharmacy-grade bentonite, approved and monitored by a government-approved body, is available from us as BentonitMED in cans and violet glass jars. You can find more information about BentonitMED here .

What is BentonitMED used for?

BentonitMED can selectively bind harmful substances in the gastrointestinal tract like a sponge and naturally excrete them from the body. The indigestible BentonitMED, along with the bound harmful substances, is naturally excreted in the stool via the intestines without burdening the metabolism. By binding heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium) and aluminum, for example, BentonitMED can reduce symptoms such as fatigue and headaches associated with elevated heavy metal levels. When administered orally, BentonitMED forms a thin protective film of montmorillonite gel. This protective gel gently coats the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, which can reduce the effectiveness against pathogenic factors. BentonitMED is therefore particularly suitable for detoxification in sensitive mucous membranes of the digestive tract.

What is ZeoBentMED used for?

For those who can't decide which mineral is better suited for their detox regimen, we have the perfect choice: ZeoBentMED. Our popular blends of zeolite and bentonite powder combine the properties of both volcanic minerals. Together, these two natural minerals can support the elimination of harmful substances, thus making a valuable contribution to protecting your health.

Due to its crystal lattice structure, natural clinoptilolite zeolite possesses a high selective adsorption capacity and molecular sieve functions against various substances. Montmorillonite bentonite has the ability to bind various pollutants on its surface and in the interlayer spaces. It is swellable and, when administered orally, forms a thin protective montmorillonite gel film. This protective gel film coats the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, which can reduce its effectiveness against pathogens.

ZeoBentMED can relieve symptoms caused by elevated heavy metal exposure, including headaches and fatigue. This natural, independently tested product made from zeolite and bentonite acts like a sponge to bind harmful substances in the gastrointestinal tract and naturally excrete them from the body. ZeoBentMED, along with the bound harmful substances, is naturally excreted in the stool via the intestines without burdening the metabolism. By binding heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel) and aluminum, ZeoBentMED can relieve the burden on the body. The natural montmorillonite gel film contained in the bentonite acts as a protective layer on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract.

Can I use zeolite together with dietary supplements?

Scientific studies, observational studies, and practical experience in naturopathy have not shown any negative effects on vitamin and mineral balance. Nevertheless, we recommend taking zeolite and the dietary supplement separately to ensure optimal absorption. The dietary supplement should be taken approximately two hours before taking zeolite to allow sufficient time for it to be metabolized.

The difference – zeolite, bentonite or ZeoBent?

Zeolite and bentonite are both known as effective pollutant binders. The difference lies in their mineralogical structure. Zeolite, as a microporous tuff rock, has a crystal lattice structure with cavities, while bentonite, as a clay mineral, has a layered structure that swells in water and forms a gel film. This is also known as a montmorillonite gel protective film. When applied orally, the gel protective film of bentonite gently coats the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, which can reduce the effect on pathogens. BentonitMED is therefore particularly suitable for detoxification of sensitive mucous membranes of the digestive tract.

Due to the different structures of the two minerals, there are also differences when stirring zeolite and bentonite powder into water: Add the specified amount of zeolite powder to a glass of water, stir briefly, and the suspension is ready to drink. Bentonite powder, being a clay mineral, has a very fine powder, comparable to flour or pudding powder, which tend to stick to spoons and containers. However, with the help of a whisk or whisk, bentonite powder can also be easily dispersed in water.

Those who wish to use zeolite and bentonite simultaneously can use the ready-to-use ZeoBentMED mixture, which combines the properties of both volcanic minerals. Experience has shown that the two minerals complement and reinforce each other's effects.

The three products ZeolithMED, BentonitMED, and ZeoBentMED share common characteristics: they all have laboratory-tested quality, are approved as medical devices, therefore have CE certification, and are supervised by an external testing body. We offer the products as powder or vegan detox capsules, in cans, or in violet glass jars.

Which is better: bentonite or zeolite?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Both minerals, known as effective toxin binders, have been used successfully for many years and have already helped numerous users. Zeolite powder can be mixed more easily and quickly with water. However, for sensitive gastrointestinal mucosa prone to inflammation, the protective gel film of the finely powdered clay mineral bentonite could be helpful. This protective gel film is created, for example, when bentonite powder is whisked or stirred in water. When consumed, the protective gel film of the bentonite gently coats the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, which can reduce its effectiveness against pathogens. Therefore, for sensitive gastrointestinal mucosa, BentonitMED is recommended. Ultimately, not only individual needs but also preference determines which mineral is perceived as better. Decisive factors here include personal perception and the preferred method of administration. Some people prefer a combination of both minerals to achieve optimal results. For these, we offer ZeoBentMED, our mixed product of zeolite and bentonite powder.

Status of medical devices and their significance

What does the CE mark mean?
The CE mark on a medical device indicates that the product complies with the applicable legal requirements of the European Union, particularly with regard to safety, health protection, and performance. It indicates that the product has been properly tested and meets the specific requirements and standards of the EU. For medical devices, this means that they are safe and effective and meet the specified quality standards. The four-digit identification number following the CE mark (e.g., CE 0477) represents the manufacturer's notified body.
Are zeolite and bentonite food or dietary supplements?
No, these natural minerals are not food or dietary supplements. They are often mistakenly labeled as such. In the European Union, the internal use of zeolite and bentonite requires appropriate independent testing. This is partly due to the fact that zeolite and bentonite are not legally approved as food or dietary supplements in the EU. Therefore, zeolite and bentonite may not be labeled as food or dietary supplements, but may only be offered and sold as medical devices for oral use or consumption.
Which zeolite and bentonite are suitable for oral use?

Zeolite and bentonite are available in different qualities for different purposes. In the European Union, the internal use of zeolite and bentonite in humans requires appropriate testing as an oral product. Through independent testing, the manufacturer demonstrates the suitability, safety, and efficacy of its zeolite or bentonite products for internal use in humans. The labeling is carried out with the "CE mark" including the 4-digit number of the notified body.

Not all zeolite and bentonite are suitable for internal use. There are various types of zeolite and bentonite for a wide variety of applications, including decontamination in waste management and the nuclear industry; wastewater treatment; as an additive in the construction, paper, ceramics, or mineral oil industries; in detergents; as bedding for cats and livestock; as a feed additive for livestock and pets; or as a soil additive and improver in agriculture, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Each area has its own quality requirements.

We supply zeolite and bentonite powder exclusively in the form of CE-certified medical devices for internal use.

Why shouldn't you buy cheap zeolite or cheap bentonite for internal use?

Low-cost suppliers of zeolite and bentonite products do not provide instructions for human consumption because the products are not intended for this purpose. Zeolite or bentonite without CE marking are not demonstrably subject to inspection and approval by a neutral, third-party testing body. Neither traceability nor the avoidance of contamination in the manufacturing process can be guaranteed.

It is therefore advisable to rely on independently tested medical devices. Only successful CE approval ensures that the products can be taken without concern and are also tested for safety and effectiveness.

Are there any unwanted side effects?

Despite the 100% natural composition of our medical products, zeolite and bentonite can occasionally cause side effects. Constipation may occur, particularly during the initial phase of use, but this can be alleviated by adequate fluid intake and dosage adjustment. In rare cases, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue may also occur at the beginning of use or when the detoxification process begins.

Are there any intolerances?

Intolerances, as well as allergies and intolerances, can cause unpleasant physical reactions – but they usually relate to food. Zeolite and bentonite, however, are not food.

Although our certified medical devices are taken orally, the minerals are not absorbed or metabolized in the gastrointestinal tract, but are completely excreted. Individuals react differently to different substances, and in rare cases, side effects such as constipation may occur. Different reactions due to the detoxification process are also common.

Application & dosage

What is important for first-time users?

The instructions on the label should be followed carefully. These describe the application and duration of use of each product in detail.

We recommend drinking plenty of fluids while taking this medical device to prevent constipation.

  • Mix with water to a paste-like consistency, apply to affected areas, cover with compresses and leave to work, for example, overnight
  • For skin care, take a pinch of ultra-fine powder in the palm of your hand, mix with skin care cream and apply as usual
  • For masks, mix 1 teaspoon of powder with a little water, apply a thin layer, rinse off after 10 – 15 minutes

Properties & Features

What is the correct grain size?

Zeolite and bentonite are available in different grain sizes – from fine powder to slightly crumbly and sandy. The smaller the grain size, the more effectively they bind pollutants and the lower the dosages possible. The larger the grain size, the higher the dosages required. For example, a very fine zeolite with an average grain size of less than 10 micrometers is recommended for a daily dosage of up to 1.5 grams, while a coarser zeolite with an average grain size of less than 40 micrometers is recommended for a daily dosage of 4 to 6 grams. Both grain sizes "work." This allows everyone to choose their preferred grain size based on personal preference and the intended use.

Testing the particle size distribution is an important part of the incoming goods inspection of our raw materials. According to laboratory test reports, the average grain sizes of our natural mineral powders are approximately 35 micrometers (35 µm) = 35,000 nanometers for our ZeoliteMED, approximately 9 micrometers (9 µm) = 9,000 nanometers for our ZeoliteMED ultrafine, and approximately 16 micrometers (16 µm) = 16,000 nanometers for our bentonite.

And what about nanoparticles?

The grain size of zeolite and bentonite should not be too small. This means that they should not contain nanoparticles. According to the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the research literature does not report any cases in which the vessel walls of the digestive tract absorb or allow the passage of inorganic nanoparticles. To prevent potential risks, we use zeolite and bentonite with grain sizes in the micrometer range in our natural products. For clarity: 1 micrometer = 1000 nanometers or 1 nanometer = 0.001 micrometer.

Powder or capsules?

The powder is mixed with water and drunk, meaning you need a teaspoon and a drinking vessel. The taste can be described as slightly dusty to earthy. Capsules taken with water are ideal for on-the-go use and allow for particularly easy dosing. They also offer an alternative for those who don't like the taste of natural minerals. Our capsule shells are purely plant-based (vegan) and contain no additives or additives.

The powder, mixed with water and drunk, has an effect throughout the entire digestive tract. The plant-based capsule shells are not enteric-coated, meaning the capsules release their contents from the stomach, so the effect of the powder begins in the stomach.

Zeolite powder or ultrafine powder?

We offer zeolite in two different grain sizes: powder and ultrafine powder. The slightly coarser powder leaves a slightly crumbly feel, similar to that of traditional healing clays. The slightly finer ultrafine powder is "crumb-free." The dosage also varies. For example, you use a level teaspoon of the powder, compared to only half a teaspoon of the finer ultrafine powder.

Can or violet glass?

Proper storage is important to us. Therefore, we've created two options for you to choose from, depending on your personal preferences. The high-quality material of the plasticizer-free containers is impermeable and lightweight, making it ideal for our natural minerals. Before using our product for the first time, you can easily confirm its authenticity by removing the seal. Afterward, the container can be tightly resealed.

The second packaging option is dark purple glass, also known as Miron glass, which offers superior protection: it also won't react with its contents, impart flavors, or absorb odors. Their wide opening makes our jars easy to refill.

How long do zeolite and bentonite last?

The raw materials, zeolite and bentonite, remain unchanged for many years under constant storage conditions. The shelf life of our medical devices is limited to five years. Please note the expiration date on the label.

Experiences & Studies

Since when has there been experience with zeolite and bentonite?

Earth in the form of healing clay made from rock powder, clay, peat, loam, loess, mud, and moor has been used as a gentle, natural remedy since time immemorial. Zeolite was discovered in 1756 by the Swedish mineralogist and chemist Baron Axel Frederick Cronstedt. The molecular structure of zeolites has been known since the 1920s, which enabled their use in ion exchange. Since there was a shortage of natural zeolites in the 1950s, synthetic zeolites were produced in the laboratory. Today, natural zeolites are also mined in large quantities and of good quality.

Around 1890, the American geologist Knight explored a clay deposit near Fort Benton in Wyoming (USA), which was named "bentonite" after its location. Along with accompanying minerals such as quartz, feldspar, mica, and calcite, its most important component is montmorillonite, named after its deposit near Montmorillon in southern France. Like zeolite, bentonite is mined in large quantities and used in a wide variety of applications.

Are there any studies or observational studies?

Yes. If you enter search terms such as "zeolites," "bentonites," or "montmorillonites" into the scientifically accepted "PubMed" database, you'll find thousands of scientific studies from a wide variety of fields, including medical ones. Due to increasing levels of pollution, detoxification therapies are an important component of naturopathy, which is also increasingly using pollutant-binding natural minerals such as zeolite and bentonite. Thanks to the tireless work of Prof. em. Prof. Dr. med. habil. Karl Hecht, a German physician, scientist, university lecturer, and expert on zeolite and bentonite, these two natural minerals are becoming increasingly well-known in this country as well. In recent years, he has published several scientifically sound books (see book recommendations) on the effects and health-promoting uses of zeolite and bentonite.
